As a mechanical engineer who has designed and manufactured a full range of package boilers I am constantly looking for tables and other data to add to my reference book, You're pages on oil firing were easily understood and insightful and will be of great use to me in the coming months. I am undertaking a Yacht 2 Chief(<3000kw <3000GT) oral examination in 2 wks.
I have never worked with steam and on super yachts probably not likely to.
However the orals contains aux boiler care and management.
I hope to now pass this topic, Fantastic drawings and easy to understand text.

As an engineer on the dutch museum sea going steam tug "Furie" build in 1916 in Holland, and sailed in Swedisch waters for more than 55 years named as Holmen III and Holmvik I enjoy your site and have a question about the cylinder oil which we have to use for lubricating our cylinders of the triple expansion engine. I am looking for the best oil which we can use. The problem is that the oil we use at this moment give some trouble on the fire tubes.
The boiler is build in 1916 also and in a very good condition.

Dear Lars,
Great pages...nice to see a fellow marine engineer (never say ex-MEng because its like the priesthood..a devotion) imparting so much experience for general consumption. I'm probably a little younger, but I started on automated ships in Australia. When I finished my time I decided to gain more practical experience and went back to old general cargo ships (tramps) with one of the few remaining "reputable" tramp companies..The Bank Line. Got plenty of experience and had a great time as well.
Since worked for many years with package boilers ashore and as a Combustion engineer. Just started my own business (6 months) in Australia dealing with burners and combustion on both liquid and gaseous fuels.
The experience I had as a marine engineer has served me well. By the way I am sure I have been to your home town loading aluminium ingots for China?? Probably around 1977.
