I have a similar background to your own and found your articles of great interest and some found memories and not found of the scotch boilers and replacing the internal fire bricks around the throat at sea.

    4 December 2003

Lars very nice web page, my grand father was a master on the great lakes he would build models in the winter lay up, I have one of his models of a steam tug about 5 feet long, all that is left is a boiler I believe to be a scotch boiler I am trying to restore this boat and web pages like yours are a very big help thank you!

    1 December 2003

Looking for history and evolution on Scotch Marine Boilers. I have been in the boiler industry (stationary boilers) for 22 years and I like your website.

    25 November 2003

Very good material on marine boilers especially Babcock & Wilcox. The ROV has two B&W boilers feeding 6000 HP Westinghouse turbines. Ship is being restored at Richmond, Ca. USA

    23 November 2003

Many thanks for providing the very good explanitory drawings of the boilers so that I may explain them to my boy.

    23 November 2003

Your information are very useful for all boilermen

    21 November 2003

I have not operated a steam plant since 1978 when I was promoted into management (Chief Engineer). In the US Navy, ca 1967, I operated 600 psi controlled superheat "M"type boilers generating approx 150,000#/hr.
Reading your comments/questions/answers has really brought me back home again.
By the way, this is the first time I've ever communicated over the internet.
Thank you sir for your web site.

    14 November 2003

Your web site was like a ray of light in anotherwise dark room.

    5 November 2003

Great site Lars,
Been Chief Eng. for more than 10 years but only once sailed on a steamer in the early 70s. Right now i am writing technical documentation for a steam powered FPSO, and this site gives me a lot of useful information for the operational part. Such a site can only be written by an enthusiastic professional.

    24 October 2003

Very informative, simple keep it up Great work!
Thanks and best wishes.

    23 October 2003

Excellent, Thank you.

    22 October 2003

An excellent site from an experienced engineer. We are also looking for good and if possible young steam engineers to sail on LNG vessels. Lars are you up to it?
Best Regards,
Steve

    19 September 2003

Very good stuff, congratulations! Rgds.

    19 September 2003

I am looking for steam engineers for a steam turbine driven VLCC. If anyone with a marine background is interested please contact me.

    17 September 2003

Excellent site - a lot of hard work.

    17 September 2003

It's not often one finds great material from someone's experience. It seems that most presenters feel that theory is all that is needed. Thanks for your down-to-earth and very useful explanations.

    17 September 2003

So far I am delighted. But we will get back to you after having had a chance to examine this more carefully. Nice Job!!

I started with Steam Engineering in May 1944 with training at the U.S. Maritime Service Training Station at Sheepshead Bay, NY. I Retired 01/01/93 after 49-1/2 years of service. I was the first Chief Engineer on Sea-Land Services Class SL-7 Vessels, Turbine Driven twin screw rated at 60,000hp each for a total of 120,000hp with a crusing speed of 33 Knots, the fastest container vessels ever built to this day. I alway loved my steam engines, I sailed on vessels with Reciprocating Engines, Turbine Engines, Turbo-Electric Engines from 1500hp to 120,000hp. I also sailed on Diesel Powered vessles from 10,000hp to 35,000hp. I worked with Scotch Boilers and all types of high pressure boilers. I hold a U.S. Coast Guard License as Chief Engineering Officer Steam and Diesel Any HorsePower. I alway prefered Steam Plants. Nice web site keep up the good work.

Have been into hobby steamboating for over thirty years. Stumbled on your website through the Steamboat Association of Sweden. I am in charge of a project of the Northwest Steam Society (http://www.northweststeamsociety.org) to create Guidelines for Operating Safety in our Hobby and have found your site MOST helpful. Many thanks.

Most interesting, I am just starting to learn a bit about generating steam and want to concentrate on very small steam generators of less than 0.5m max dimension.

    1 May 2003

This site was very interesting, especially for people which works in steam boiler systems, I hope it will be completed with another menu like uncommon trouble shooting guide next time, thanks.

    25 April 2003

Have been involved with steam for 25 years overhauling boilers on all types of vessels mainly for the RAN. Found the site interesting and easy to follow. Keep up the good work

    21 April 2003

hi Lars,

Most informative, a wonderfull oportunity to further my knowledge on steam, especially the Lamont Boiler. Steam is still alive and one day people will realise the value of Steam and the potential towards new generation Steam Cars.

    24 February 2003

Your website is the Bible of boilers. I was really impressed by the amount of information present in the website. To put it in a nutshell, its a job well done. Cheers.

    14 February 2003

The site is a pride for steam engineers. I was just looking for "What is a DCS (Distributed control system) in the LNG steam vessel and landed here. I have been indeed very delighted to brows the wonderful site. I would reserve my gratitude if could the site clarify "What is DCS?"
Thanks and best regards.

Very interesting, I was trying to find Lancashire boilers.

    5 February 2003

I am glad to know the information about boiler. It is totally a new world to me who is majored in economics.

    5 February 2003

Great graphics!

    28 January 2003

Have not had the time to fully explore this site yet. From what i have seen it is a very good site with a lot of techinical information that i can use in my steam plant. I am mostly interested in different calculations. How to determine safety valve capacities H.P. heating surfaces etc. etc. Keep up the good work.

    21 January 2003

As an owner/operator of a good sized steam plant aboard an ex Norwegian whaler based in mid equatorial Pacific waters, it is very gratifying to find a site like yours with many tips and contacts for maintenance and advice on nearly any question to do with steam propulsion.

    21 January 2003

A nice layout. Looking for how to reach (what to do) for more efficiency of a boiler.

    15 January 2003

Great indepth knowledge of boilers explained in simple language.
I am a marine personal working on tankers as a mate. Was just surfing for some simple operational procedures.
Best regards

I have been directed to your site from usegroup rec.boats.building. I am becoming more interested in steam power over time. This site is very interesting, Marvellous. I have not yet found a glossary, there must be one somewhere? This site is enthralling, captivating, even enchanting.
I started out very casual, now I am very respectful of the old time steam engineers, I had no ides this was so complicated a subject. An elementary section might help for such as I.
How about a very simple toy section, like for a steam powered wood stove air circulation
fan / humidifier accessory? I will check out your other site links.
Thanks! Wonderful.
