I am a long retired marine engineer nearly 80 years old. I fully qualified on steam and diesel ships many years ago and sailed on steam ships using, the old scotch boilers, B & W water tube boilers, Yarrow and Foster Wheeler WT boilers. Later in life as an Insurance Engineer surveyor I also came across other of the boilers you mention Brings back memories as most are non-existent today in New Zealand where I live and originate from.
John.

    29 November 2005

Might well be the best boiler related site I have found but I haven't read everything yet. :)

    16 November 2005

To my surprise found detailed information on the Scotch boiler that we found as a wreck on the remote coast of Oman. Hope that we can further in determining the story of that wreck.
Greetings
Jan

    16 November 2005

It is an excellent page. Aren´t you interest in producing in company coal boilers in Colombia?

    16 November 2005

This is a very good site, I enjoyed it very much.

    13 November 2005

This is the best site I ever visited, I am a marine engineer too.

    5 November 2005

Hello Lars; your site keeps me for hours and hours on my compu! I'm one of the stoker/engineers at Steamtug S.S. Scheelenkuhlen in Holland and d I use your site to improve my knowledge!
Greetings Ton

Pretty accurate overview of the marine boiler deal. I never cease to be amazed by the ingenuity of our supposedly backwards ancestors, particularly when it comes to steaming. With the water treatment systems availible today, the tear downs and retubings, ect. of years ago are almost a thing of the past. Sadly for me, my steaming days are done. Bad lungs and boiler rooms don't mix. Good site.

    2 November 2005

Excellent website for all marine engineers. Thanks for giving all the information.

    20 October 2005

I'm wrighting about steam boilers history and I'm searching for the Velox boilers. What firm manufactured them, what type of boiler was it, when were they constructed and of whom. Please notice that I'm not meaning that boiler which was introduced by the Brown Boveri Cie in 1932, I'm meaning its predecessor. I've read about this one in a paper from 1911.

My name is Jan Rasmussen I am teaching at a technical college in Denmark (EUC-Syd).
One of the subjects I teach is steam plants, today I was surfing at the Internet for informations about steam machinary tasks. By chance I discovered your home page. In your home page there is many fantastic explenations about equipment and the nature of steam plants.
My request to you are, can I have the permission to go deep into, a few, your pages and use them for my school supplies.
Yours Sincerely
Jan Rasmussen

Extremely informative web site. Excellent all round.

    5 September 2005

Dear sir,
I have just found this site after a long search but I have to go through a lot of pages but looking at the index I think my search for boiler is over. If I have some question I think I can email it.
Thanks any way.

    4 September 2005

I haven't had a chance to look yet, visitors' book is the first thing I've seen on your site.

    1 September 2005

I am a junior engineer and preparing for my exams. This site really changed my knowledge about boilers. Thanks for the good work. Please include thermal oil systems, steam turbines for the marine industry.

    31 August 2005

I will bookmark your page. Presently I am just beginning research in using wood as a fuel for steam energy. I a construction manager on a turbogeneration project at a Pulp & Paper mill. Getting to understand this is getting my interest alive.

I like your web-site. I am a retired chief boiler inspector and honorary member of the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors. I like the site!!!

    23 July 2005

Good morning Lars.
This is my first visit to your site. I am not an engineer, but just a poor old retired sheep farmer aged 77 years with a still alert mechanical enquiring mind.
Firstly, I must congratulate you on your informative and interesting site.
You may wonder why I entered you site.
My parents migrated to Australia in the Commonwealth Line "TSS Esperance Bay" a Beardmore built passenger ship, and my interest is to discover full details of the ship's propulsion system. I know that she was powered by two steam turbines possibly made by Beardmore under licence. Of the boilers I know nothing.
Then I stumbled upon your excellent site. I now know a little more about marine boilers that supply steam to the ship's turbines.
Please do not get the impression that I am seeking your help. My main purpose in contacting you is to congratulate your on your very informative site, in particular in the uncomplimented way you have gone about presenting the technical descriptions.
Well done Sir. I am pleased to have "crossed your path".
Yours faithfully,
Albert HOARE.

Hi! I find your site very interesting. It helps me a lot in my power plant design specifically on thermal plants. Thanks & keep it up! Hoping that you would input more knowlegdeable materials & facts regarding steam plant for us students. Again thank you & god bless=)

    8 July 2005

This website is very nice. I could never thought that I would ever get such an website. This website has surprised me. I think only giving thanks is an insult.

    28 June 2005

This is a great site!
Though I am working as boiler designer for stationed boiler for producing electricity I found this marine boiler site very interesting and astonished how much knowledge you have and devoted to make this great site.
I wish I can 'steal' a lot of knowledge from here as you 'expect' and pass on the knowledge for the future generation.
Thank you!

    21 June 2005

What a very interesting site, located by search engine via the word Sunrod. I have added it to favourites for a future use. I was a project engineer for Hamworthy Combustion for 20 years and spent a lot of time working on and with the boilermakers around Europe, notably Svenska Maskinverken at Kallhäll. Also Foster Wheeler, Babcock, Tampella. My grandfather worked for JohSamuel White shipbuilders in Cowes Isle of Wight fqr all of his working life, and was involved in marine boilers.

    13 June 2005

Hi Lars, Greetings from Ireland , Like you I was a Marine Engineer on steamships & motorships and I am qualified as a Chief Engineer. I have looked at some of your very comprehensive site and it brings back memories of many things. What wonderful engines those triple expansion engines were. Ah yes the smell of the steam, checking by hand the top & bottom end bearings with engine at full speed. A fellow engineer once described a steam engine in motion as a "symphony of steel " and I think he was absolutely correct. I enjoyed your site and I will explore it again in the future. Well done, good luck & Kind Regards Pat Kelly

    10 June 2005

This is wonderful web-site for the visitors that may grant or contribute useful information here.

Thanks for providing help
I hope these books will be useful
and thanks again for your concern.

I'm a Marine Engineer. I did my marine engineering from Karachi. I'm a 5th Engineer. I note all the important points on steam engineering, which give me clue to solve the problem on ship. This site is a good tool to people that works with boilers or on ship like me. A very interesting technical part about boilers and boiler automatics specially the part that points to the many bucks to earn by a few bucks on the control system design. My opinion is that this site can be used for educational purposes. Please continue the job on updating an already excellent site for all marine and boiler engineers. Sharing knowledge helps us all, and you've done more than your part with this site.
Thanks for the help with level indicators too. This will keep me up to date on the safe and efficient operation of marine auxiliary boilers. I think I have never even seen a good wedsite like this!

    2 May 2005

Very educational, I work on bagasse fired boilers, but the feed water section still helps a lot.

    29 April 2005

I would like to see more on automatic control systems. As such this is a very nice way to discuss topics which are so close yet so badly understood topics.

    18 April 2005

I'm a reporter with the Wall Street Journal and I'm looking to interview some maritime steam engineers. The LNG tanker building boom has created a huge need to steam engineers. I'd like to hear personal stories about how experienced engineers are being pursued. Please email me to share your stories.

    16 April 2005

I am the chief engineer @ Texas Maritime academy in Galveston, Texas. I have used your web site to teach the fundamentals of steem, and it is very good. Thanks

    15 April 2005

I am very thankful to u for all the information given here on the site. It helped me a lot in understanding the subject as I am doing marine engineering & marine boiler is one of the subject I have.
Thanking u.

    27 March 2005

I find this a very interesting site, as I used to be a boiler operator, and it does bring some memories.

    20 March 2005

Nice, but steam nozzles & turbines should be included.

    20 March 2005

Its good to work on this site. Very nice....

    19 March 2005

This is facinating. I'll be spending a lot of time here. Walt Mathers http://www.steamtug.org

    9 March 2005

Great site. It really fit in with a book that I just finished about WWI naval warfare. The boilers figured prominently in all the ship movements and battles.

    8 March 2005

Thanks for all! Your site it´s a good tool to people that works with boilers.

    5 March 2005

Fascinating Collection of Useful Information, I'll bookmark.
(Google found you immediately, looking up 'Velox Boiler').

    3 March 2005

Your topic about boilers is very helpful. I hope more sites would be like this, helping others by sharing useful informations that may help them in their professions. Keep up the good work.

    28 February 2005

Thanks for this favour.

    27 February 2005

This is helping in all respects to learn about boilers.
