Found your splendid site by chance looking up SS BOHUSLAN. I am involved with the 108 screw steamer SS SIR WALTER SCOTT that sails on Loch Katrine (Glasgoow`s water supply) in Scotland.

This is my first time in this site, I hope I can find valuable information and, at the same time, is possible to get interaction with other visitors.

    12 October 2007

I will like to have a copy of this and all boiler related books. I'm a stationary engineer. Learning modern automatic controls.

A super website. As a young man I operated two of the Cochran boilers, one 16 feet in height the other 22 or 24 feet in height, to provide the requirements of a textile factory. They were coal fired, using worm drive stokers. It was dirty work but I loved it. Thanks for bringing back some memories.

Lars, I have enjoyed looking through your sight was interested in the Scotch boiler that used to be used in the ships built in the 30s & 40s especially the 'War' built ships. My first ship was one of the Canadian 'Forts & Parks' built to the North Sands type she had an oil fired boiler of the Babcock & Wilcox type. No I was not a "down below man" I was the 15 year deck boy. I've been reading about the War built ships have the book on the Forts & Parks and the Yankee Liberty ships and I'm waiting on one on the British 'Empire' ships. Did 2 1/2 years at sea then went to the railways where I was a fireman on steam and a driver on the diesels all in all I spent 40 years working for railways. Now I'm looking back at my sea days.
You have a real nice sight much appericated.   Thanks, Malcolm

Really very good presentation on steam and related subjects.

You are doing an excellent job. I find this website very informitive. Keep up the good work.

As a marine engineer which never sailing for very long time, by visit this website, explore & withdraw my memories and refresh my rememberance that so helpfull to make correct decission to help my engineers to solve their problem . Thank you so much.

Hello Lars a friend of mine was asking me if I knew your boiler down here in Houston Texas. Since I don't perhaps you can tell me where to go to see some pictures of installations or any info that would help. I recently opened my own boiler shop here in Houston after 25 yrs plus, 20 in Chicago, with 2- other good friends with the same experience. Thanks for you time.

    6 March 2007

Very good information. As an ex marine engineer, I enjoy reading marine steam plant information.

    15 February 2007

Nice site! I was looking for information on Hjo for genealogy & ran across this site. Since my farfar was on a steamship (SS Lansing, a whaler on Pacific fleet), thought I would look around.

Memories of 1975 when I was a Stoker, punching the sprayers, and blowing soot on a Leander Class Frigates Boiler. Great website.... Thanks.

I am a fourth year marine engineering student from Myanmar Maritime University. I have never seen such an excellent site before. I love boilers. Therefore I am very fond of this site.

    23 January 2007

What a surprising find! I was a Chief Eng on a couple of nuclear and conventional steam plants.
I have bookmarked this site. Very nice.

    20 January 2007

I have been a licensed marine engineer for over 36 years now and I am still in the business. I have sailed extensively as a Chief Engineer on both Steam and Motor vessels. Your site is quite entertaining and very informative. Thank you for taking a great amount of time to share your knowledge and experience on your very interesting web pages.

I do have a question that I may have asked you once before. Please tell me several reasons why a pair of marine steam turbine propulsion plant boilers should use viscosity control of the fuel to the burners.

I feel the main reasons to maintain proper viscosity at all times is because: 1. the boiler will smoke less, cleaner combustion 2. the burners will not foul or carbon as much 3. the fuel in the storage tanks stratifies and the control system will make adjustments for that variable 4. can keep closer control of excess oxygen resulting in better economy.

Thank you again for a great site. I wish you lived closer so we could discuss the ability of a marine steam plant to compete with a modern slow speed diesel plant when ALL costs over the life of a plant are factored into the view.

Dear Lars,
Thank you for the great job you had done I think it is more like marine boilers handbook. I would like to suggest to you to include some parts on industrial boilers also some about control boxes and electrical wiring of boilers any how good job thanks and best regards Akram Azam Jordan

Excellent site. Although I am retired now (from Power Engineering), I enjoy reading material on the subject.

I am now retired after 40 years in the engine room 36 of it as a marine engineer, and all of it on steam ships no "freakn diesels". My trade mark was to make a brass and or copper whistle in the engine room in each ship I sailed on. Enjoyed your website!

I'm an old marine steam engineer and I enjoy going through Steam esteem!!!
